Current Events

It took me awhile to decide what to blog about. This post isn't about my own thoughts on current events, but rather what the response to current events looks like in rural Missouri.

I pay attention to politics because I want to know if my insurance is going to go up, or my taxes might go down (never does.) I also need to know if we're going to go to war and will my kids get drafted.

Right now after the murder of a woman who's last words were, "Its okay dude, I'm not mad at you." Things in major metropolitan areas are full of people protesting. Good on them. However in rural Missouri, which is a red state now, with maybe 4 blue counties (where the people are) it's like nothing is happening in the larger world.

My husband got me a tattoo on the 9th, was a belated Christmas present and I said something about the news. I made no political comments, just asked if they'd seen it. The artist informed me that she does not watch the news nor pay attention to politics. That is basically the all around theme here. No one seems to care, or seems to observe what is going on broader than just what is happening in their tiny corner of MO.

I was living in a major metropolitan area on 9/11. Everything shut down, my husband missed out on a job, because the company he was training at closed and he missed out on training. Everyone was glued to TVs and radios. I don't know what it was like for rural areas, but currently, what's happening politically now, doesn't even seem to be a factor in life. People are just going about their days, going to work, going to bars, going home and doing it all over tomorrow.
